I saved a 16" W.M. Barber shaper from the shreder.

I am home for the day and after taking care of the chores I was able to spend a little time checking it over and I found
1) the stroke control is locked in the max stroke. in the scotch yoke.
2) It is a 2 speed for sure.
3) I need to procure a motor ASAP.
4) I will be having some serious fun with it.
I am off to points in Iowa tomorrow for a Monday delivery. after that trip is done I will have a little time to work with it.
First Questions, How would the screw be locked solid and what is the original color?
Thx for now. I will be cycling it by motor next time I am home.

Could one of the Mods be kind enough to correct the name from W M Barber to W M Barker please?

Made any progress with this? It warms my heart every time another piece of vintage machinery is saved from the Chinese foundries! My old shaper (18" Newey) seems to have a pretty strong motor yet, but I was thinking if I ever had to replace it, I'd look into a DC drive, or VFD and 3-phase motor for variable speeds at the turn of a knob. Treadmill motors are cheaper than dirt and most are 2hp (realistically about 1 hp).

I feel pretty fortunate that my shaper is in such good shape after reading about what some guys have to do repair wise to their machines. Mine is ugly, but nothing is broke.

I have made a little progress on it. So far I have been able to free stroke control and the ram, it seems the previous owner had everything locked down tight with the jib screws. I have a 2 hp motor that I will be using and I will be running at 60 strokes per minute roughly to start with. trucking all over the continent doesn't allow much free time. That will happen this week end this will mark the end of a 13 day trip.

PS: maddogmech1 I would like to see a pic of yours.

Here's my monster. She's done good by me so far, but I need to do a lot to bring her back into ship shape. Namely find or build a proper vise

Oh, and if you need something to go off of to build a new table feeder, yours looks very close to mine, I can get better pics for you next time I'm in the shop, measurements, whatever you need

Why buy something when you can build it for twice the price!

i have wanted a shaper for a long time!!!
Great find!!
Good Luck and keep us posted as to your progress, I can't wait to see that she's working again!!
Include lots of pictures!!

Hey Dr Mikey, You had better make the jump, for entertainment I look around on ebay c/l, and I swear shapers are going up $100 a week. Just in the few past
years so much shaper stuff on the net. I think people are starting to understand what they can do. they can drill holes too! lol I can.

A while ago I found this Bertram shaper that I have wanted to go get but I don't have a place or the resources to restore it. if one of you guys would like it I can go see if it is still there. and get a price.
