I have CCMT09T30 inserts on my 11” lathe. My lathe would probably be better suited for hss but I like the finish I get with carbide when it all works. My problem is that the inserts I have chip really easily. They usually chip if I am hand facing or turning to a shoulder and getting chatter from touching the shoulder.

Is this nature of these inserts or is there any recommendations for inserts that can take abuse?

Oh it’s for steel. I have CCGX’s for aluminum.

I'd think that ccmt would be tougher than that. I use CCGT for everything and accept the occasional chipping. One less thing to inventory. CCGT works fine on steel.

Unless you are clobbering the shoulder why are you getting chatter? Sounds like something has loosened or needs adjustments. Or are you taking big cuts?

Well. They are the inserts that came with the holders I got. They had no info on them. Maybe they are ground and not molded?

Get some good inserts, the ones that came with the holder are probably lower quality. I like the inserts Curtis has at www.latheinserts.com, I also buy Kennametal off of ebay. Be careful on ebay and inspect the photos for any red flags they are counterfeit. You can also check Travers and see what they have on sale, sometimes the prices are good and name brands.

To be fair, I always toss the "included" insert and fit one from stock.

What is the last digit of the insert number? "CCMT09T30" is missing the last digit. it should read as "CCMT09T302", "CCMT09T304" or "CCMT09T308".

You also need to look at what the "grade" is... (NC3030 / PC9030 / VP15TF /UE6020 / US735 etc etc etc)

That’s the thing. The inserts that came with it have no labeling at all.

Do you like running the 4 or the 8 nose radius?
I have both but have not done enough repetitive work to have a preference.
The usual recommendations apply, larger nose radius gives better finish. Smaller nose radius allows finer cuts, smaller DOC.
Get a pack of each, they're cheap economical.

MT are usually molded. The GT are often ground to meet the higher tolerance, if I recall correctly. But it's quite possible you have run into a bad lot, or manufacturer. MT's ought to be a bit more rugged. You ought to check out @MrWhoopee 's recommendation, he has found some good stuff. I bought a face cutter based on his recommendation and it's been awesome.
