How much pressure are you applying. The 1/2" balls I found on Amazon are only rated for 33lbs.
 
52100 steel balls at McMaster are hardened and have yield strengths of 295,000 psi. Just saying that steel balls procured on Amazon aren't likely to be industrial grade. They're more likely to be junk steel, you know, like old wheel barrows... I'm sure real ball bearings are even better, but that's as far as I searched.
 
But, it's not just a ball bearing. It's a ball in a cage with a bunch of other bearings to let it turn easily and smoothly.

I'm not knowledgeable about these assemblies at all, was merely commenting on the quality of some Amazon stuff I've received vs a real industrial supply house. Carry on. I hope to learn something new.

The ball assembly is supported internally by Belleville washers that are rated at 12Kg with a 3.3mm deflection. I compressed the washers by 0.35mm for the steel block.
 
Having the ball able to freely roll in all directions and set at 45 degrees to the spindle axis allows it to burnish contours too.
