I am moving on to inside thread cutting.

For internal right hand threads I cut away from the headstock using a left hand cutter with the lathe in reverse.
Cutting a single groove at full depth first provides a convenient start for threading passes and a neat end to the thread, best of all you can cut at the rated feeds, speeds and DOC for your cutter.

In cutting pins and boxes in drill pipe we could not cut relief grooves. My opinion is to develop the skills so the relief is not needed so that in case a job comes along where you cannot cut a relief it's no big deal. Come up with a visual cue that works for you, o-ring, tape whatever. If you never stretch you mindset progress is slow in coming.

I use a 2 inch dial indicator for boring or internal threading. The sweep of the dial allows me to anticipate the end of the cut. If I machine to a shoulder on a part that doesn't allow a relief groove, I shut off the lathe about 50 thou before the end zone and it will coast to about .015 from the
shoulder. I thread the rest of the way by hand.

If a groove cut with the threading tip is not acceptable at the end of a thread I do something related but not the same, I still cut away but I use the DRO, by positioning the cutter just a little deeper than the start point then hand winding to the start point before engaging any cut depth.
I then apply the cut depth for the pass and engage the clutch, I haven't chipped an insert yet with this method and again it's about the only way to use carbide at the recommended speeds.
