Blown Away

Thank you for this most educational and compelling presentation of
a masterfully simple yet powerful technique. I shall be expanding
its usage manifold.

Best.

Gordon,

The vise in my video has keys in the bottom as well. The difference is that it also has a swivel base, so whenever it gets rotated to a different angle it needs to be re-aligned.

Gordon,

I could never trust a pin. What would happen to the alignment as the pin and hole wore? Besides, The tolerance between the pin and hole would need to be too tight or it would need to be too far from the center of rotation on the vise to be practical. It literally takes me less than a minute to indicate a vise to within a couple ten thousandths of an inch and in doing so I know it's right and my work will be square.

Tom :)

it was a suggestion. No more no less. I can't imagine a reamed hole and a hardened pin wear in your (or most others) lifetime unless used harshly several times a day. I've no doubt you can align in one minute or less but I've seen many others that take a bit longer ;)

As mentioned, it was just a suggestion so if any find it useful then it is an extra option. No criticism was intended.

Gordon

Gordon,

There is nothing wrong with constructive criticism or expressing a new idea. Maybe someone will try out your suggestion on their vise and find out that it works well. I just have an inherent distrust of pre-sets on tools and never assume they are correct. Probably because I've been burned by them too many times. There are stop pins on my sheet metal brake that I don't use because the angle of the bend varies with the thickness of the sheet metal. There are stops on the miter gauge of my belt sander that I don't use because they are inaccurate, I don't even trust the angular divisions on my dividing head other than for a rough set-up.

I apologize if I sounded testy in my rely as it was not my intent. That's one of the problems with emails and posts such as these; it's easy to misinterpret the authors feelings behind their response.

I see that you are a new member and would like to welcome you aboard. Feel free to introduce yourself over in the Introductions and Welcome section, and tell us a little bit about yourself and your hobbies. Be prepared to post pictures though because we love to see them. :)

indicate a vixe and a meeting of the minds

Great example of two guys meeting in the middle. No harm no foul. I just thought that was a terrific example of coming together to keep thinks going in a friendly way. Hope I can do as well

That's what the General Idea here is. Look beyond the black and white of the text on the screen where you can neither see the face, nor hear the tone of voice of the poster. You can't see the "tongue-in-cheek", either. It takes a lot of that on a forum to keep things light, the way we want them.

Thanks to both of you, Gordon, and Tom.
