How to harden

You'd burn a hole in stainless steel wrap with a torch. I only recommend it for use in an electric furnace,or something that has no direct flame. What is called a muffle furnace.

As for a coating,I'll have to think about that one.

Edit: I KNEW there was something I was forgetting about!! Knife makers sometimes use a sprayed on coating of HIGH TEMP automobile engine paint instead of stainless wrap. Some of these paints will stand something like 1400º F. There may be even higher temp paints available by now. Read the label of the spray can,and make sure you are getting the highest temp. paint. Also, maybe ask the auto store dealer. Googling high temp. paints might also give useful info.

This is high temp enough for the less exotic steels that quench in water or oil. Not for air hardening, I don't think,BUT,I could be wrong. I don't ever have a problem with W1 or 01 decarbing,so I don't see why a knife maker would need to use a paint on those steels. I'm sure there is more to its use than that, though.

I don't know how much trouble there is in getting the paint OFF after you use it,but I'll bet paint remover isn't going to touch it!! Hello, elbow grease and wet or dry!!

I have just used the stainless wrap, and bought a huge 4" roll from a member on another forum. Unfortunately, there are 2 types of stainless wrap, and my roll isn't the higher temp stuff. I still have some higher temp stuff on hand, though.

It isn't that the stainless costs so much. It's that you have to buy a whole roll.

PPS: I just Googled "high temperature protective coating for knife steel". There seems to be several coatings you can look into.

Has anyone tried borax as a coating? Once the steel is half-way hot, dunk it into a can of powdered borax. It should melt into a clear glassy coating. I think it might stay in place as you bring the steel up to temp. It will come off with hot water after you are finished.

Just a thought. I haven't done much heat treating.
