Impression of pic #1 says, while only the tip penetrates workpiece, a large portion of top rake is forming the chip for ejection. Farther towards the shank, the top does not exhibit relief; looks flat.
Figure on chip size could be 3 or 4x feed rate and depth. Less for brass, more for steel and aluminum, even more on stainless.
