The "P" is the O-ring series; the 22 is the ID in mm and the 4 is the cross section (D) in mm.

Success! I had a 22mm x 4mm O-ring on hand and got the gearbox back together last night.

If anyone is reading this and contemplating opening the gearbox on a similar lathe, it was not necessary to remove the knobs/levers from the from cover. Putting it back together was a balancing act to get all four levers properly engaged and moving smoothly. It's all working now; just need to add oil.
