I used to trepan thousands of bearing races out of tool steel. We would make a larger set and smaller set out of the same piece of stock. It made sense for large number of parts. BUT I would not try it to save one piece of 1/2 inch long stock. It‘s
not worth it. We used to trepan some larger 17-4 stock about 3 inches thick And 12 inches dia. There we saved hundreds in material costs.
One thing if you try to do it don’t try to cut all the way thru part. That can shatter the tool into pieces and you could get HURT . Stop about ten thousands short of breaking thru. Then break apart with a hammer.
