My shop is heated in the winter and air conditioned in the summer so moisture is not an issue. I agree with you that WD-40, or any light oil for that matter is not good for long term storage. What you need for that is chain lube, which contains wax to hold the oil in place. Loctite makes it in aerosol cans and it works great.

I clean my machines by dousing them down with WD-40 and wiping them off. About the only thing it won't remove is varnish from the oils on the painted surfaces, but alcohol works wonders for that. Maybe the guys complaining about crud allow the stuff to sit until the solvents evaporate, but I haven't seen it.

Just warning about what many professionals have said. It bears listening to when a whole bunch of machinists say the same thing.
