Total newbie here! I have a small Boxford lathe the I'm trying to get up and running.
It did come with 10mm holders, minus the inserts. I noticed most of the holders I see for sell have 2.5mm screws and my holders have 3mm screws.
Can I find inserts that will take a 3mm screw?

There many different shapes and sizes of inserts. Often the holders have the type and size printed on them.

If you can post pictures of your holders, that will also help people here help to identify them, for you.

It isn't really a question about what the holders are, they have 10mm shanks.
I think I have a LH turning tool, RH turning tool, External threading tool and a Boring bar.
I'm asking about the hole sizes of new inserts and if these holders with 3mm screws will be a issue when buying new ones.

Here is a picture of some of the holders.

Looking at your holders, it looks like the holders use 3 different inserts.

This Chart will help you better identify the sizes and "Naming Convention"

From Top to Bottom

1) I can't quite tell from the angle of the image, but It looks like it uses an insert different than 2nd and 4th

2 & 4) Look to be "D" type inserts. (Possibly something like DCMT)

3) Is a Threading Tool, and uses a different insert than the others. Possibly (TNEC?)

Given the holders use different inserts is why they may have different screw diameters.

Hope this helped...

I know what the inserts should be. For example the right and left turning tools take DCGT 09 0202
My question is not what shape I need, but if I order DCGT 09 0202 inserts, is that enough to ensure they will take a 3mm screw? Is there some part of that number that describes the hole size?

Carbide Inserts follow an ISO standard. So for any specific insert, DCGT for example, the through hole should be the same.

I personally have never experienced a particular size of insert, with different size through hole diameters, thats from the Real ISCAR Inserts to Ebay knockoffs.

ISCAR does show the through hole diameters for DCGT inserts. Smaller inserts have a 2.8mm dia hole.

These 3mm screws on my holders aren't going through the 2.8mm holes, right?

Don't think so.

It might be that you have holders that take custom inserts, or obsolete inserts. If that's the case, (but I don't know that for sure), you might look for some tool holders that take "normal" ISO inserts. They are not hard to find.

I was thinking the same thing. However, I just had a poke around and I see that Valenite inserts are still available and at least two of your holders are Valenite. I think Sandvik is continuing to make them? Anyhow, might be worth checking Valenite inserts specifically and see what their through hole size is.

I did find a catalogue and flipped through it but didn’t see that information right off the bat. You may have better luck if you spend more time in it, or send an email to Valenite / Sandvik and ask. Or buy new holders….
