There is no definitive book to go to for theses tricks that I am aware of. As Tony Wells said to me the other day, "The only way to learn these things is to rub elbows with the old timers."

As for paper and plastic, yes it's a second step. Many times when plastic is tapped it is done too quickly. We then re-tap the hole only to find out the middle or end is still tight. Paper takes care of it in short order. Thank you for opening your ears and your mind. You will go far.

Today, listening is an art. You need to learn to do it with your mouth closed, you have accomplished this in short order. Kudos.

One will find many tips and tricks that have never been published anywhere just by listening and or watching an older toolmaker or machinist. Many of these tips or tricks are only told to those that are willing to learn. Some may seem like magic and have no real explanation for why they work. But they do work.

There is a book that Brownell's sells "Gunsmithing Kinks", that has tips on all sorts of things. It would be nice to have something like that for machinists.

I like things that Work , Bill G is there a particular paper ?. I have read that Brown paper has less clay in it , so it grips , white paper has more clay in it ,, So it slips . I think it works, I use brown paper in 5c collets ,Grip + Protection on brass casings. Any how thanks for the info
Bill h, I'm all eyes and ears ,wish I had a local school with machine tool technology class. I used to mess with machining 35yrs ago , probably got a little rusty,
But thanks for any tips info
