this is the rotary setup I made but it has the old 5-inch chuck on it. with that one, I wasn't able to make custom jaws so that's why I bought the 6 inch.
So many things are 6-sided and 4-sided that I would think anyone should have both a 3-jaw and a 4-jaw chuck with the 4 jaw having independent jaws. You can always dial in a 4-jaw chuck to be extremely exact. A 3-jaw may not be so exact but usually you can get the piece close enough with some shims such as cigarette papers, aluminum foil, notebook paper, etc.
