Help with #3 MT Angle?

??
Mac, Depending on how far the tailstock is from the face of the grip point will give you a different angle of taper.

Cheers Phil
the number giving was on a 6inch peice turned between centers useing the tailstock i believe

I never try to measure that stuff. I just make cuts, draw a line with chalk down the side, and wring it into the hole. When ALL the chalk wipes off,it fits.

IF you try to calculate it,and your cutting tool isn't RIGHT on the centerline of the metal, the degrees will be off.

i do understand that alot of you guys can doit in no time at all but like me i have to try and do it by the book or i wouldnt even come close to knowing how to even start, i have made 3 so far this way i did finish up the last few 1000ths by hand to get a good fit but it took me alot of time going back over the math:thinking:Mac

but i do hope this wasnt luck lol what i did was cut my pieces to 6inches put them between centers then i used a digital indicator and mounted it next to my tail stock center jig zeroed then i proceeded to move my center slide to the desired offset then i locked it down. i went back and marked my piece ith a felt marker the starting point and the ending point then i made relief cuts on both ends then i set my compound to travel the length without binding once that was set i rechecked my tool to make sure it was on center and correct angle and then started machining, now please if i did something wrong by doing this please tell me lol my tapers seem to work fine but that dont mean there exactly right lol:biggrin:Mac
