Hi all,

Last week a Heavy 10 with taper attachment followed me home but it's missing the support rod and bed rail clamp that locks the taper attachment to the bed. I have other lathes and mills so I can make the parts, but I'm not sure how long the support rod is supposed to be. This is a shorty 10L with the 3ft bed if that matters at all. I've had a 10L with a taper before, but sold it a while back.

I'm essentially looking for the length from the very back of the taper to the end of the rod where the nut screws on. The OD of the rod and the thread of the nut/bolt end would be nice if you know that as well so I can make it reasonably close to the original.

Needs a good cleaning and I've got a few new parts for it on the way....new headstock shims (they were a bit too tight), new cross feed screw/nut, AXA tool post and holders, and I'm putting a new micro V-belt on it this weekend. It came with some other goodies...a few I can use, a few I'll sell.

The length of what you market is 6.25" long. The bar is 0.625" in diameter. Not sure what the diameter is through the clamp without taking mine apart, but the end is, I believe, 3/8"-16. There are two washers on each side of the clamp.

Do you have the clamp, washers, and nuts, or are those missing, too?

Sounds like you've got a good foundation, but a bit of work in front of you. I love my 10L, you'll love yours.

Please do one thing for me, too. Open the gear train cover on the left side, and check the gear on the spindle. If it is a long gear (2" long) your collet closer attachment will be perfect.

Getting a heavy 10, with a collet closer, two chucks, lots of drill chucks, and a taper attachment is a big lottery win.

Is it a 10L or a 10R?

Thanks...that's what I was looking for. The clamp is missing as well, so I'll have to fabricate one. I've already reached out to Lost Creek and SBLatheman to see if they have either the tie rod or the clamp. Lost Creek didn't and I'm waiting to hear back from Ted.

This is actually my third 10L. It was a bargain and not far away, so I could resist. I'm just going to get it fully functional and then let someone else enjoy it or do a cosmetic restoration. I've already run it through all the speeds and feeds with no problems and put a new 8-rib micro V-belt on it yesterday. I have a set of headstock shims, an AXA tool post and holder as well as a new cross feed screw and nut on the way as well. I've got three other lathes in the shop now....14" Logan, 14" Clausing and 16" Victor so it's getting a bit tight!

It definitely has the correct long gear for the collet closer attachment and I've tested it for function. It's a 10L with the 1-3/8" spindle bore. I've had two previously and this popped up about 45 miles away two weeks ago...couldn't resist it. I've got four lathes now so this is just going to be a project where I get it running nicely (doesn't really need much) and then let someone else enjoy it as is, or maybe do a cosmetic restoration. The more I clean and scrub on it the more I realize how nice it is!

My mid 1940's SB 10L has the same 6.25" length and 0.625 OD, at 4.0 inches long the shaft goes down to 0.438 and the end is threaded for 7/16-14 x 0.62" long. I do not know how it is attached to the taper attachment.

Thanks...the taper attachment on mine is definitely threaded for 7/16-14. I've found other references saying theirs were 7/16-14 on the outboard end like yours so it seems they probably used that for both ends...just simplicity.

On the good news side I located a used clamp so now I just have to make the tie rod, pour some babbitt to fit them together and make a bottom clamp plate...that's a lot easier than having to make the clamp portion!
