I've often wondered if a gantry fabricated from 4x6 lumber with steel tube reinforced and gusseted "corners" would suffice for "moderate" lift jobs around the shop. The steel tube dimensions could be selected to allow the 4x6 members to easily slide into place, and easily dismantled and stored.
