Because the mounting studs on the backing plate (120 degrees) interfere with the 90 degree spacing of the spider's dog screws.
One solution would be to make a spider like 'ridgeway' did with 3 mounting holes to fit in between the D1-4 studs and locking screws.
I like the upgrade on the dog screws also, I think I'll go 1/2 x 20 with some inserts to hold a 1.25" copper wire ring, I use a big 4 jaw now with an outboard spider. I think I can reduce the distance between the spiders 3" with this setup. (be able to do shorter bbls in the headstock)
