Grizzly 0761

Correct me if I am wrong, and as a rookie I probably am :) Would the play in 4 inches of spindle movement be more or less than the movement within the head over the same length? I am trying to think of times where I needed something thicker than 4 inches machined that did not need to be rotated in some direction for completion and I can't think of any. Iwill look at the spindle bearings see how they are mounted, perhaps a "sleeve of bearings" would relieve the chatter issue?

Thanks for your info and patience.

Now that said, if you are undeterred about converting the G0761 here are a few thoughts. Seriously look into converting it to belt drive and upping the spindle speed. Counterweight the head to take the weight off the Z servo. Convert to some form of variable speed drive. Think about one of the quick change tool systems, swapping R8 tools is slow and annoying in CNC use. Think about an enclosure to contain the coolant and giant chip mess it will fling in all directions at higher RPM's.

So, coolidge, thanks for your input. I started looking seriously the amount of work required, so thought, Christmas approaching, maybe I can sell it. It took 5 days and I actually made money on the deal because of the Canadian Dollar being at lows, the cost of a newer one, made mine attractive. So now considering your other piece of advice which is to look at a PM. I am not in a rush, so can sit like the proverbial vulture waiting for my chance to swoop in for a deal.
