Greenfield #8 tap wrench handles

well guys, I think I have arrived at my solution. A buddy of mine has some SCHED 80 3/4" black pipe. I'll get 2 18" pieces from him and use that. It will be stronger than the SCHED 40, and yet won't be as heavy as the solid stock I have. Good compromise I believe. I'll "trick them out" a wee bit on the lathe with knurling at the ends, and might even turn down some little plugs for the ends that can be pinned in (or threaded in since this is sched 80 stuff. Thanks for all the input. Oh, I have also changed my mind on the Sunset Fucia.......I think I will go with plain old polished steel and a coat of gun cold blue. It'll dress it up fairly nicely. I'll try to remember to post picks when I am done.

so, I went with the Sched80 black pipe. I turned some end caps out of 1" stock and dressed them up a wee bit. For the small diameter that fits into the pipe, I made them 0.002 over the ID of the pipe. I heated the pipe to cherry, and dropped the chilled end caps in. They aren't going anywhere. I guess if I had some 1.125 stock in the shop, I could have matched the OD on the pipe, but I actually kinda like how the caps look.

Stay away from direct sunlight, if this is not possible cover your handles at all times.

Good point. I'll avoid using them after eating garlic or wearing crosses. Good safety tip Egon!

I would make a set of 24" handles, too. You'll thank yourself later when you tap 1-1/4"-7 thread by hand. 1"-8 is bad enough!

I have an older, I think, Greenfield #8 and was wondering what the measurements for the handles are? Mine seems to have 1"-14 threads but I can't ascertain whether they are tapered or not. I tried a standard 3/4" pipe nipple but that doesn't want to start. The best I can measure there is about an 8° included angle in front of the threads but the threads aren't tapered that much if at all. I'm not sure how to measure if there is a taper on the thread. I wish I had a set of pin gauges that went to 1".

c--I believe you'll find that the thread is 7/8-18

Figured it out! It is a reduced size 3/4"-14 pipe thread with an 8° included taper above the pipe thread. The taper goes from .975" the major diameter of the large end of the thread up to 1.050" the outside diameter of a 3/4" pipe.
