Got Myself A Craftsman Horizontal Bandsaw

When I bought the saw it seemed to run just fine, however when cutting a block of steel it made a snapping and popping noise that bothered me and would become worse as the cut became heavy.
I decided to investigate the noise and discovered the small drive gear was missing some teeth. Further investigation and disassembly led to discovery of the cracked center boss on the driven gear and band wheel.
The pics show where the boss is cracked.
Had I known the parts were not available I may have not bought the saw. However the saw is one of the best built I have seen on the market. Not withstanding the fact I used this very unit many years ago and appreciated its abilities back then in the late 60’s.
So, I’m faced with replacing the gear or making a new one !
I like the way you fab’d your new one and hope I can do the same in the future.
If you’re willing to share your master cam file, that would be much appreciated !

I think you might be able to salvage that. Your teeth are in great shape. May I suggest you make a 2 piece hub to replace the fractured section. Being 2 pieces you can capture both sides of the wheel to stabilize it.

I will look on Monday and see if I have the file. It is at work. I beilive it is MC2023 I think I saved it as a STP file also.

I will let you know.

Also if you need a new small gear I had a few grown in NYLON.

I can see how to repair the drive wheel and gear now that it’s out. Should be an easy operation. I see a simple way to repair the saw band drive gear and am planning to begin work right away. Thanks for providing the pictures of your repair, they sure helped me to see how to proceed with the restoration.
I do however need the small bevel gear and feel it should be nylon for wear durability and long life.
Im not sure what the 3-D printed gears are made of, so if you have nylon available I’m interested and willing to purchase thru you, if you are willing to be a supplier. I’m not worried about the cost, I just want to restore this saw.
These older machines are worth it ! !

Thanks for all your help ! ! Especially the bevel gear, and help to find tires.

Still working on getting all castings and parts cleaned up. At my age and health it’s taking a long time to get the work done !
Still trying to get up the energy to break out the pressure washer and get busy !
Maybe next week I’ll be able to do it.
Also hope to modify the table the saw sits on so I can mount the motor on the underside. Need to cut a slot thru the table top so the motor belt can run thru to the saw pully. Also need to shim the base casting of the saw to make more clearance for the drive pulley on the saw.
Still quite a bit of work to be done in order to make the saw a workable machine.
With luck and well organized planing maybe I’ll get it done before winter sets in !

Getting down to the end, making preliminary adjustments to blade before putting drive head onto base. Along with scraping the rusty surfaces ! After that all fine adjustments need to be made.
Some cold weather has set in slowing the assembly down. Along with arranging for help to lift the drive head onto the base.
Should have it running in a couple of days !
Have opted not to paint quite yet. Not sure where to find original color, any suggestions ??
