Flights to China

We haven’t been back to China in four years and my wife wants to go back and visit her mom, they are doing direct flights again, so she checked our usual direct flight out of Newark to Shanghai. For a mere $14,000 you can fly direct to Shanghai, or use 900,000 miles for the privilege of flying United. I thought she was joking or got the fares mixed up, but that is the actual cost to fly COACH on the days she searched. Looks like she will be flying through Europe instead for 1/7th that price.

My wife said even at that price, the flight will probably still be full of rich Chinese who don’t want to take a connecting flight…

The US State department has a level 3 travel advisory associated with China. I'd guess that may have some impact on costs.

Yeah, that’s almost what we just paid for a semester of college for my son. Her mom is getting up in age, so what ever it costs, she needs to go, but at least there are alternatives through Europe that don’t impact the tool budget much

The US State department has a level 3 travel advisory associated with China. I'd guess that may have some impact on costs.

That may be part of it, but more likely is it is one of the few direct flights that are flying again. China severely restricted direct flights from the US during covid, so you had to get a connection somewhere. I guess saving 10 or so hours of travel is worth that price to some people.

My wife’s cousin’s husband works in logistics in China, maybe he can find a container for her for the return trip

Ever since COVID it has been expensive and a bit questionable to travel to China.
