Finding alternate steel sources-Forged steel?

I would do a grinder spark test...that'll give you an idea if it's high carbon or not.
 
My guess would be 1045 or a proprietary alloy that is similar
a good steel for most general projects and hardenable to a degree.................My$.002
 
I put the pieces in the parts washer this morning.
I then ran a grinder test. The sparks split like a sparkler.
That surprised me. There are some interesting properties to this stuff.
I'll use it to make some machinists jacks or something. It has to be strong enough to withstand the suspension and steering demands of an F-250 4X4, diesel pickup.
Makes me consider what the content of the over seas aftermarket offers compared to the original??
We can buy a brand new complete CV axle for less than $50.
Think about that, two highly polished CV joints, boots, clamps and the forged steel axle material.
Produced, assembled, packaged and shipped across the Pacific to our door step for less than $50.
The manufacturer, the shipping Co., and the wholesaler are all getting paid along the way.
How the hell is that possible?
I paid $51 for an 18" piece of chrome molly 1/2" X 1/4". ??
