Two questions.
Is this forged steel?
What would I have if I cut it on both ends, turned it, then put it in my raw stock pile for future projects?
Have you worked with this stuff? -that's 3 questions.

Tie rods and drag links off an American made Ford pick up.

Steering parts have to be good quality steel for safety reasons, keep it for something that needs strength and toughness like a drawbar

I've used front wheel drive shafts except for the splined part.
They turned very well with no problems.

I agree with just get rid of the messy ends and store as is. Wouldent you hate if you had turned it down a few thou under or cut it off just a bit to short for what you needed for something that might not have cared about the rough finish?

Hmmmm,
I took these home, cut them on the horizontal band saw.
I don’t think I’ve ever cut such soft metal. The blade cut through effortlessly.
Im curious to see how the chips look.

Steering parts are interesting, Of course they need to be strong to hold up under all driving loads. But then they also seem to be a weak link in a crash where they will bend if you should get hit in the tire so that it does not spin the steering as hard to rip your arms off. I have seen some gruesome hand and arm injuries where the tie rods were extra strong home made for off road and they did not give and the steering wheel spun while the driver had a death grip, cuz he knew the crash was coming.
