The attached is about inspection of used Myford lathes, but a lot of the things to look for are pretty generic so it may be of some use.

Be careful on the SB lathes. The old ones have bronze spindle bearings. Not the end of the world if they need replaced - you can use it as an excuse to replace the spindle with something (anything) other than a screw. Grab hold of the spindle and really lean on it, don't be polite with it - if it has sat around for a while you may not feel the wear unless you put some real muscle on it. You won't hurt it unless you stick a spud bar down the taper.

Other than that, price is all that matters.
