Face shield

My last wage slave tour was manufacturing fruit packing equipment for a foreign owned conglomerate in a huge metal building. Management in their wisdom used temp agencies to bring bodies in as needed and on average was lucky to keep one or two out of 50 or so. 99% had no experience and we were supposed to “train” them which was often close to impossible. They were like locusts moving through the shop destroying equipment, losing PPE and basically causing chaos while management complained we were talking too much and not getting anything done. Like craftsmanship and safety was suppose happen through osmosis. I got the rep of being a jerk for yelling at these idiots so thankfully was on my own most times. But us all being in the same building meant I had to be on the lookout from all directions.

We were prepping for an install and getting stuff packaged up to go and were given this kid who was a zombie. They gave him an air nailer and was told to nail the bundles of equipment as we set out the stacks and 2x4’s. We are working away and I hear this kid rapid firing these big nails(think a framing gun) and I keep hearing a twap on the wall next to us. I realize he’s just blasting away and the nails are hitting the wall insulation behind us! I yelled at him and he never responded. The guy I was working with who was huge and scary went over and grabbed the gun. The kid had taped the nose safety down so it would just fire any time he pulled the trigger! It was sheer luck we were not hit with those flying nails.

I was on a construction job years ago and the new guy grabbed a 9" grinder, fired it up and proceeded to grind metal bars on the side of the cutting blade in prep for welding them. It wasn't his grinder either.
I never left my grinders where anyone could use them and never loaned them out again.

My 4-1/2" grinder stays locked away, I despise using the darn thing. Despite beying several years old, it still looks brand new. Very rarely use it unless I absolutely have to. Even then, full PPI. No excuses.

Now a dremel on the other hand........ Even wear a face shield when using that if it has a disc of any form mounted in the chuck. Those things may be small, but when they shatter and they do more than you would think, you do NOT want to stop one with your face, let alone your eye.

I think I have six 4-1/2” grinders and I use all of them. Grinding discs, flap discs, zip cut blade, wire wheel, etc. Most were bought used at garage sales, often for $5-20. Sure nice to just grab another grinder than waste time changing discs. And yes, all deserve a full face mask, including the Dremel.

Same. I think I have 5 corded and two cordless. Not having to switch disks is a big time saver, particularly as I go back and forth quite a bit between a grinding disk, flap disk, and a wire wheel when welding.
