I went with composite wood ( plastic ). No painting, no fading, no maintenance. UV resistant. Done
 
I use plastic and composites when I can make the dimensions work. You’re limited to stock sizes unless you’re willing to expose the filler core material.
My slats are 1 1/16 x 1 3/4 and beveled to work with the curve of the brackets. They’re glued together with three 1/4” spacers between each to add strength.
