ER32 Tapping collets or a Keyed chuck for machine tapping.

Tim, I've tried all kinds of different chucks. Lots of people love the Made in USA Jacobs N-series, but they shifted manufacturing to China a while back and those are no where near as good as the older versions. If you do buy a used Jacobs N-series that was made in USA, you can always rebuild them, but that path is expensive.

When it comes to keyed type, I have two favorites if you're buying new. Here are my two favorites:

Stick with ball bearing types.

Two years ago, I ordered an Accupro, a Jacobs, and a Vertex and took them all apart too to do a comparison. The Vertex is by far the best of the bunch in terms of construction.
