Enco is it worth it?

As mentioned above, the Lathe part of the Jet Family of Lathes, which were sold under a variety of names (Enco, LAM, TIDA, Grizzly, etc). The particular lathe shown looks like the Enco Branded version of the Jet-1236PY(?). As the Name Plate shows, it's a later version, which is nice as it has the forward reverse switch/lever as part of the Carriage.

Grizzly Industrial sold it's version as the G9249. Though Grizzly no longer sells it, they do still sell most of the parts. Many are interchangeable with the other Lathes in this family. I was able to get some missing changes gears for my Jet-1024 though Grizzly.

Regarding this particular price. It is definitely a fair price, especially if the ways are clean and it comes with the accessories, 4-Jaw, Follow and Steady Rests, Face Plate.

Of note, these lathes use screw on Backplates/Chucks and came in a couple of Diameters with 8TPI. Mine is a 50mm with 8 TPI (Yes they mixed mm and inches), and I believe the 12" lathes were 60mm x 8TPI. Not super common, so if you need a backing plate for a another chuck or Face plate, and can't find one on Ebay, etc. you might need to machine your own back plate/ face plate, as I have yet to find a pre-threaded one off the shelf.

I'm super happy with my lathe, theres's a strong following for this family of lathes on the site. There are also a number of manuals from the various brands under the Jet Lathe section.

Hope this helped.

I had to learn how to get a lathe into my basement. Was interesting learning about some rigging. I managed not to kill myself or my buddy, so I count that as successful. Did get to test out the failsafes though. Darn good thing they were there. 2 infinitely long seconds of terror followed by the chain tightening and holding.

Long time ago, I signed up for that book. Never really used it, as I didn't care for it. Went on Market Place a while back, and actually bought something "local". But, yeah, that book it is its own little world. Not my world.
I have done it before. I take it apart.. Did the lathe, did the mill, surface grinder. I have a winch / dolly system, doesn't mean it's fun, doesn't mean I want to... but that lathe looks nice.

it's not a taper chuck, or d3??? Ok, not interested.. already have that. If I get again, I'd like a D, or L mount.

Yeah I would think it is either a D1-3 or 4.

No. This is a style of chuck mounts. In my opinion I think it is desirable.

I have this exact model lathe, built in 1993. I've been very happy with it and it just works with little fiddling, only an alignment.

For your reading pleasure.
