Thanks for the info on the Craftsman, that could be useful. I did get my part from Emco Holz und Hobby but it took a year's wait until their supplier made some new parts.

I bought one of these for my compact 8. I had the same issue with mine
ebay Emco-Compact-8-lathe-Cross-Slide-Nut/113249562815
It works good. Doesn't look the same but it is steel.
