I understand what a dial indicator is but what is a DTI? It is referenced in set up instructions. Thanks

DTI is a Dial Test Indicator which typically read in half thousandth or ten thousandths of an inch. Usually they have a limited full-scale range of +/- 15 or +/- 5 thousandths of an inch, respectively.

They look something like this:

I prefer the Dial indicator due to the larger scope of measurement capability. The DTI is limited to measuring small increments at very small readings while a Dial indicator usually read a much larger range at .001 or better resolution. Being within 1/1000th of an inch is pretty close for most projects and the extra accuracy won't really improve a project signifgantly. The ability to sneak up on a specific measurement over a longer range is much better for me because that helps me avoid taking too much off and creating an undersized part, especially when the part needs some kind of finishing or final surface treatment like polishing or anodizing. I would opt for a Dial indicator in my tool box first, then later on as my skills and ability to work to closer tolerances improves I would add a DTI. Of course a good quality caliper such as the one Bill just gave a test run on or one similar and a good quality vernier should also come first before a dial indicator if you don't already have one or both of those devices already. As time goes by and your ability improves you could consider investing in high quality precision instruments like Starret or Brown and Sharpe, but for the time being an entry level measuring set will take most of us a long long way in the hobby for some fairly good period of time. Hope this helps..
