drill bit sharpener

I used one of these a few years ago and had good results. The only tricky part of using them is the distance the drill must overhang the holder. The correct distance is related to drill diameter, so it is different for practically every drill you would sharpen.

I quit using it when my flat abrasive wheel decided to fall apart. Replaced it with a Drill Doctor. If anything, it is a bigger PIA. Can't figure out why it sometimes insists on sharpening with negative relief. It is handy to establish the drill center after I screw them up while hand sharpening. Guys that insist on everyone hand sharpening should understand not all hand/eye coordination is the same across the population. Yes, I can hand sharpen a drill, but believe me, it gets ugly.

Well, in the first place, a regular grinding wheel isn't designed for grinding on the side, so there's a strike against it in my book, but yes, it would work. And it would be difficult to dress. If you notice on the Sterling, there is a small arm above the guard that swings down and holds a diamond nib and can sweep across the face of the wheel. Their wheels are designed for side use though. You would have to build something like that to keep a regular wheel flat on the side.

Right, on the sterling, I get it. The sterling uses grinding wheels like I've seen on monosets. Designed for use like that's and can be dressed. I think I'll hold out for a monoset.
