drill bit sharpener

I have always wondered if one of the "General" drill bit sharpeners could be made to work on the edge of a grinding wheel instead of on the side. (Which is not a recommended use for a normal grinding wheel.) So today I decided to thy it. Even though the prototype is a bit on the crude side it produced much better results than grinding on the side of the wheel and without the risk of eating broken wheel debris. Well i have a picture anyway, it aint no Darex, anyone else tried this,View attachment 52605 or have a better plan for a cheapskate bit sharpener.

I've had one of them sitting on my garage wall for years. I didnt like it and didnt know what to do with it.

Good idea.

Rather than delete a thread, I just merged them, thus not losing any information. One thread already had a reply. Hope this works OK for you. Oh, very clever. Nice job.

Why have that contraption taking up space? Grind them yourself......

As an apprentice we were given a collection of drills to sharpen by hand and you did not stop until every drill had drilled a hole in Mild Steel.

Have hand ground rads on milling cutters and got better finishes than from bought in tools. Try it......it is not as hard as you think.

PS, if anyone wants any tips on hand grinding drills post here and I will produce a guide with pictures.....

Trevor, you do not have to wait for a request to post good information on this site. Just start your new thread on how to sharpen drill bits manually. We will all appreciate it. It is a good idea.

Karl.

I always hand sharpen bits first and use the tool to finnish it up exact. I can sharpen bits way faster by jig than by hand. But i am ready and willing to see what you have to offer in hand sharpening. Bet i can learn something.

I was taught to hand sharpen drills years ago by a fellow in an old fashioned hardware store when I asked for a drill sharpener. He lost a sale but gained a regular customer. That would never happen today! I've got one of those sharpening gadgets sitting on the shelf but have never felt the need to use it. There's a great Tubal Cain video on Youtube on how to hand sharpen drills and several others have posted videos on the same subject.
