Draw Bar For Atlas Mill

I saw no need for using a hollow tube, there is nothing I run that requires it. The all thread serves to hold the mandrel in place, that's its' only function on either milling machine.

.

I believe he is referring to the arbor spacers when he mentions the hollow tube.

Possibly. Although I thought that he was thinking of a draw tube as used to tighten collets like the 3AT, 5C and similar types.

There are many collets that use drawbars(drawtubes) when used on a lathe. On a lathe I could see the purpose of a hollow drawbar. For the Atlas horizontal mill, I can see no purpose. To make the hollow drawbar, one could start with a "shot out" .22 cal barrel and cut it down. There are many Ruger 10-22s around that aren't up to hitting the broad side of a barn any more. Or a solid BB gun, one of the high pressure types. The 0,177 bore would give a better starting point for a 3/8 drawbar. And a lot eqasier to acquire in todays paranoid world. No dealing with the ATF for a "used" barrel. . . If desperate, one could buy a new BB gun and cut it down. Expensive, but available at Wally World on very short notice. . .

I dropped and lost the bushing for the draw bar on my Atlas mill. I mean the bushing with a through hole for the draw bar shaft and a taper at the end that contacts the spindle. I spent 3 hours on my hands and knees looking for it. I took the change-o-matic assembly off and looked everywhere inside. It has vanished. I think it fell through a worm hole into a parallel anti-matter universe and is being tossed around by Schroedinger's cat.

Can anyone point me to a drawing of the bushing? I just need its overall length and the length of the taper.

Thanks
You might take a peek behind the coolant pump cover. I found remnants of a gear down in there from the change-o-matic.

I have to make the whole drawbar. It was missing when I got my mill. A made the 1” arbor already but still have to fab the spacers. Looking for some heavy wall tubing to start with.
That is how I interpreted his comment above: the heavy wall tubing was for making the spacers. I think this idea of trying to make a drawbar from the OP got mixed up with this comment from another member about making the spacers for his arbor.

The two cleaned up arbor drawings and the drawings for some of the spacers are in Downloads.
