Do your machines leak oil?

None of my machines have any sealed gearboxes, but there are some shafts that run in bushings, etc, and they all drip a little oil. If they don't, then I am not oiling them enough. Gotta remember, the oil that runs out is also taking dirt and contaminants out with it. The more contaminants I get rid of, the better, and cleanup is as easy as a quick wipe down with a rag. If there is any staining on the paint, a little WD-40 or diesel fuel will usually take it out.

Terry,

If you get a notion, try rubbing alcohol or denatured alcohol to remove grease stains. The front of my mill was looking ugly where oil leaks and stains below the ways. One touch of rubbing alcohol and the paint cleaned-up nicely with no hard scrubbing at all.

Yup! Thanks, Ray! I have in the past, and do still use alcohol from time to time. It works great for removing Dykem blue or Sharpie marker too! I just neglected to include it in my list of things that I use to clean up my machines, so thanks for bringing it up!

My 1943 SBA lathe leaks. I tore whole thing apart and put together and still leaks but not badly. I get the feeling it's supposed to to a certain extent. I rode a lot of USMC helos form '75 to '95 and they all leaked too.

I don't know how some people keep their lathes looking like museum pieces. Mine get oily and dirty every time I use it.

GK1918....PLEASE get some solvent for cleanup..I had a friend years back in Ridgecrest get burned VERY badly for cleaning a shop floor with gas..It isn't worth the risk..BE SAFE and use solvent.

Ditto! For your and your boys sake. I don't even use solvent. To clean up oil on my floor (unsealed concrete) I just use clay oil absorbing material or "kitty litter". I grind it in to the concrete with the pad or heel of my foot then just sweep it away.
