disengaging feed

Thanks, guys. I'm only familiar with my South Bend, which has a knob clutch to engage the drive, and a lever to engage the half nuts.

As suggested, stop just short of the shoulder and hand feed to finish the shoulder. Back away the cutter as soon as possible as it will wear a noticeable groove into the work, plus,it's hard on the cutting edge just letting it sit there and rub against the metal.

That's true, Mike, some lathes do use a knob instead of a lever. It's just a different type of clutch. On lathes that have only a lead screw, there usually is a keyway the full length of the leadscrew that drives a gear in the carriage that is clutched to the rack under the front edge of the bed. The half nuts operate differently than a clutch. And the rack isn't involved in moving the carriage.
