I should have started documenting this sooner. Better late than never. Here is the quick back story. A few weeks back my friend called and said his neighbor was having an estate sale for his late father-in-law. He had a bunch of woodworking equipment.
I am not a woodworker but tools are tools. So I went and had a look. I found a few decent heavy 3” C clamps. When I was getting done I gave a bench another look and behind a box was the Derbyshire Magnus components. I paid $60 for the lot of lathe stuff.

The above picture is after cleaning up the bed and tailstocks.

I am going to use the geared tailstock as apposed to the plunger to start. I will have to remove the quill lock from the plunger tailstock and install on the grated one. Both tailstocks are missing the locking mechanism for the bed. These I will need to make. Also on the geared tailstock I will for the time being use the collet draw tube from the spare headstock.
I repainted the bed, tailstock and headstock with a bit of leftover Rustolium Hammer black. I baked it after painting.

More to come.

Here is the Headstock and tailstock all assembled. The bed lock pictured is from the spare head. It will not work on the tailstock. The height of the cross hole is higher on the tailstock.

I will be making lots of components. Partial list tailstock lock for quill, tailstock lock for bed, front spindle protector, tool rest(flip type) bed riser block. That will be incorporated into the base to hold lathe and motor( that is still to be determined as what I will use.)

As for holding stock. I will need to get a 3 jaw or 4 jaw chuck. I am thinking of getting the ER11 adapter. That will be way more cost effective than finding a full set of 10mm collets. Small drill chuck adapter for my small Jacob’s chuck.

All in time.

Made the quill lock this evening. I used a 10-32 SHCS CUT A 27 deg/ side angle. That tapered surface pushes on the sleeve surface to lock the quill.

Nice progress.

Thanks. I think I might make the nose cover thing later today if I have some brass or bronze. I could rob the one off the other head. I would rather leave that as intact as possible.

Question. Does anybody have rough size for a flip tool rest? Base Width and thickness. From pictures they look to be 1” wide? Shaft size of post.
Thanks

I just made the dust caps. Took just a tad over 2 hours start to finish. I did all the work on my SB9A. Super pleased on how it performed. I was able to very reliably bore out to less than .0005 on my tiny dials. Beautiful snug slip fit.
I also got to finally use my indexer I made for the SB

Scribing the 90 grooves.
