Decouple timing gears - looking for an elegant solution

Sliding a toothed belt on and off a pulley may cause excessive wear on the belt, as well as being a pain in the wazoo. Seems a simple dog clutch on the driven pulley would serve well enough. Smaller steppers can be overdriven with enough leverage, but still a pain. I would remove the driven pulley key and pin it to a small 'Lovejoy' coupling. Pushing the handle in pushes the Lovejoy out of mesh. Perhaps a Lovejoy has too much travel to be practical, a spring loaded sawtooth ratchet disk would serve as well for lighter loads.
