Custom sized HSS blanks?

Depending on your lathe and how your toolpost attaches, you might also be able to cobble up a rest from a suitably-sized piece of angle. Not nearly as versatile as a dedicated and properly engineered rest, but might fill the gap until a better one appears.

One of the things I did was use a large boring bar sticking out on the large lathe. it was stiffer with the stick out, and also rounded on top which let me move on it better. And small mill with a small belt can do more than you think, I have a sherline with a small belt and I did more on that that I originally thought was possible. You just have to take slow light cuts at times.
