I ended up with a 600lb crane from OTC that they dont even mention on their site anymore. The wiper on the rod had been blown by so I figured a rebuild would be in order.

It did come with a pump that runs on air but I ignored that in favor of a hand pump as I wont have power where I need this thing. The air pump is sitting on the leg closest to the camera. Who know how damaged it is.

This thing worked fine. nothing to say bad about it. Spilled a bit of oil trying to figure out how it works though. I didnt even bother with the fittings and replaced them before i tried it.

getting the cylinder apart was difficult. I Had to mill flats onto the collar which I put in a vice and got it to turn with a crowbar in the welded part of the eye.

I put a chain on it today and raised it to make sure we were good to go to try and lift this 5' tall 2600lb lathe I need to get 3 feet or so off the ground and the cylinder started to leak near the wiper. According to the parts manual I got from a 3rd party site Lazarr's HCRCNow there is only 1 seal on the piston itself with the only thing between the outside and the piston being the wiper.
I have not rebuilt a cylinder before, this is new to me. Apparently there is usually a seal then a wiper. I figured maybe the kit I bought was only one side or something but the manual doesn't have another seal anywhere near the wiper. Only thing else near it is the guide but that's just a metal ring. I guess the wiper is a wiper seal

I did bleed the air out of the cylinder, Its part of the process of using the handpump according to the amazon link. This thing didn't have a manual just product pictures with instructions.
only thing I can thing to do is maybe tighten the collar some more but that doesn't seem like much of a solution. Maybe I have the orientation of the wiper wrong? I did read too much air in the system can exacerbate the leak

I went off the old wiper's orientation when I replaced it. was easy to tell because of the blowout. Idk what catastrophic stuff happened for the dudes using this thingold seal orientation.jpg

i can get it to here before the leak is very apparent

Not sure what the deal is, I had the boom fully extended before and that should be much more weight than 10lbs from the chain that's on there now with the boom fully retracted.

did you replace the piston seal? There should be no oil above the piston If oil gets above the piston it has nowhere to go except out the wiper seal.

I did but who knows if thats in the right way. That copper washer in the kit I didn't end up replacing as i thought it went to the old fitting that I completely replaced. maybe that's part of it

There shouldn't be any oil on the top side, if that cylinder dwg is correct. There's a static ring seal on the rod, in addition to the piston seal.
