Could this be a solid carbide lathe tool ?

I think what you have is a ceramic magnet. since they stick together. The coloring had me confused, so its starting to make sense.

does it stick to iron? take an angle iron, if it sticks, it's a ceramic magnet.
 
I tried to see if some screws would stick , they did slightly also a thick steel washer but neither very well . There are what looks like two sides where surface ground . If done on a magnetic chuck would have kept them magnetized ?
 
Ceramic magnets are normally ground on the contact faces. I think they are non conductive, but not 100% sure. Carbide is conductive.
