Chatter Turning OD

When I start getting chatter, I slow the rpms down... that helps 99% of the time... even when using carbide. Also, if you can, use a live center to help support the end of the work.

Can I inquire the reason for the soft jaws in the first place? Is it required for the part your making?

Probably just how the chuck came?
They are actually soft jaws and not hardened reversible?
Doesn't really matter either way, as long as part is held tight it will always spin 'true' as te bearings will allow, eccentricity doesn't matter until your switching parts around, your machining it to be round even if it is 'off centre slightly. Seems an awful lot of people are seriously 'over-thinking' the problem

I needed some jaws for my chuck and I just could not spend that kind of money for hard jaws, since the chuck is LO it would have been expensive to buy a new chuck with harden jaws. The soft jaws were 40.00 so they will get me by till maybe I will come across some harden jaws that will fit.

First, do the obvious things like make sure the jibs are not too loose, the toolpost is tight, etc. If that does not fix things then, the compound is probably extended too far. You want most of the cutting action to take place above, and well within, the boundaries of the carriage. If the cutting action is happening too close to the left edge of the support rails of the carriage, the downward force of cutting is trying to lift the support rails on the right side off the ways.

EDIT: BTW, that looks like a CCMT 2151 and judging by that, the piece you're cutting looks about 0.5" diameter. For soft steel, that should be spinning around 1200 RPM. This is a partial cause of the vibration because you're increasing your cutting forces by not having enough speed to perform the cut.

Thanks Ray,when I make my next shaft I will raise the rpm and use my tail stock.I need to find me a decent live center, the one I have is about 3" dia which does not give me alot of rm when close to the tool post.
