Change gears a PITA on 6" Craftsman lathe

I was using the manual you refer to.
 
Thanks to the help I got here, I think I'll stick with this lathe and see if it will do what I need, now that I know that the gears come apart to arrange them differently. :) After spending about 6 hours total with the gears, they don't seem so intimidating.
