My $.02.
Use metal tubing for the verticals and the all-thread, top to bottom. You could make stepped washers (like a straw hat) for the top and bottom of each tube to center the all-thread/tube and interface with the shelves. 1/2" (trade size) EMT (Electrical Metallic Tube) conduit is steel, light, strong and probably cheaper than wood and about 3/4" OD. Paint as required. Very strong assembly.

I'm not certain of the dimensions, but the unit looks pretty large in the image. I think any construction method other than one piece steel rod putting the whole stack in compression will be venerable vulnerable. Instead of paying for long all-thread, die cut threads on the top and bottom of plain rods (1/4" probably OK).

I hope you have EMT, or the down under equivalent, available.

Nothing turns out to be as simple as it seemed when you first thought of the concept. LOL
