If you don't mind me asking - what was the ballpark for getting it welded?

A lot more than I expected. I have it posted here somewhere, let me see if I can find it, because I am fuzzy on the cost now. I think I know what I paid, but not absolutely sure.

Do you know if they used an E-Ni55 or an E-Ni99 rod?

no, I don't.
I think I paid $120 for the repair. I remember the next repair he hit me for $220..

Ouch ! $220 to repair the same thing?

no, 120, he repaired my cross slide for a taper attachment. It needed the grub screw holes filled with braze. But he filled it with nickel making it useless, as drilling and tapping are now out of the question. Nickel is so hard.

I have some peices to a Walker Ceramax magnetic chuck that I need made. Gonna attempt them first myself however if I fail, lol, I will be on the hunt for someone of your skill set

I wonder if modifying the brake ring where they crack to utilize a "hinge" would work and eliminate the whole cracking issue altogether - similar to a drum brake arrangement. See the quick concept sketch below.
