Boreing suggestion

When you get into larger bars its easy to mill a slot and make your own, even at different angles, like a 45 degree.

This is why you save your broken HSS centre drills. The small ones made great boring bar bits (once they are reground of course)

OK
Boring bar on the way (Moparfever suggested) and now I'd like to know about any suggestion on the 1/4 HHS tool bit grind.

Just a std LH turning? (I'll be cutting toward the spindle)

Thanks Gents

I use the angled end of the holder unless I'm threading, gives clearance on entry into the bore. That said, you're correct. Grind a left hand tool, but account for the angle of the tool, and give it a lot of clearance on the underside. For that clearance I grind as much away as comfortable for cutting tip support.

Just something else to consider - When boring towards the spindle I make it a point to set a carriage stop at the point I want the boring to end. On blind holes or where you will run in to the chuck just stop the power feed short of the stop and continue feeding to the stop by hand.

Things can get kind of ugly if you lose track of where the end of the bar is.

Hope that helps,

-Ron
