Bent jack barrel

View attachment 44063Suggestions to straighten? Thank you for your time! Robert Goode

It's not entirely clear from your pic, but it appears to be the part that the handle engages to on a floor or garage jack?

Are you referring to to the apparently flattened left side, is this an aluminum jack, and how did the damage occur?

All the above are relevant to a possible repair.

This is an aluminum jack which was bent during shipping. The jack handle installs in this barrel. The barrel is non-ferruous so I assume it is aluminum. I didn't see it until I tried to install the handle.

I would turn a piece of bar stock slitley larger than the handle with a heave chanfer and drive it in. then pull it out .

A careful application of a half round file where the barrel is bent inward. Forcing it out may crack the aluminum.

All right now, machinists....................pull it apart and 4-jaw it for boring.

I'm sorta with flutes I'd just hit it with a burr or file until it fits. Not high speed or balance sensitive.

Or I'd buy a vertical turret lathe and set it up in it. Good an excuse as any to buy a VTL! :))

Steve (man of excuses)

What about heating it? I have never tried heating aluminum before but have watched rim repair videos where they were heating the rim before applying the tool to straighten it.

Looks to me like a few minutes work with a half round file... Or a burr or a waxed up stone in a die grinder (or even a dremel).

You'd be done filing long before you drove out the hinge pins, chucked it up in the 4-jaw, indicated it true and bored it... Chances are it's just the first 1/4 or 3/8" of the end that's dinged all the way through.
