Yes, the idea is if the adhesive fails, the ledge/shelf will hold the glass platen in place long enough for you to cut power. Otherwise, the glass will get pulled into the lower wheel which would be very dangerous.

Ceramic glass is really hard but is not tempered and will shatter if impacted or caught between the belt and a wheel. A ledge is a very good idea.
