If you want to see how bad the twist is during travel set the level on top of the wings of the saddle and shim it so it reads level. then crank the saddle left and right and compare locations. I have a picture of this, but it is on a huge Lodge & Shipley lathe. But the principal is the same. Figure 8, 9, 10 shows it. Like you said, splitting hairs on a not so precision lathe. If it were a CNC lathe, I would use a .0005" / 12" level.
