Please forgive in advance if my skull is to thick to understand your answers to my questions the first time around. I'm new to machining.
PLEASE VIEW MY PICS
I'm making a new backing Plate for a3jaw and I'm not sure what surface i should be registering the BP off of ? The reason I'm asking is because if you look at the second pic the backing plate is hitting the spindles small face (faint mark in the BP pic) .. Is that all it needs ??20200415_162339.jpg20200415_163540.jpg

I have a 10K and my chucks register off the yellow line (the narrow face).

Excellent, thanks a lot. I thought it was that but wasnt 100% sure. Didn't want to ruin a good backing plate

I recently made a backing plate for my 4-jaw and I made a point of facing off some of the unthreaded portion so that there's more thread engagement. I have a original South Bend faceplate that I measured and there was only about .25" - .375" that isn't unthreaded.

My thoughts exactly. I'm about to do the same. There's about .250" to much. I figured I'll leave around .050" more then where the spindles thread ends. Same thing, it'll allow just that much more (@ .250") engagement of the threads. Glad you told me you did the same thing I'm about to do. Makes me feel I'm on the right track. Lol

You've got this. Would like to see pics of your lathe and the end result of your backing plate.

The chamfer where it fits up to the spindle should be much smaller, also, less than 1/16".
Cool, thanks. I'll cut less of a chamfer when i face off that shoulder. The less then a 1/16" referred to what ? The shoulder ?

Thanks! Is that a tach on the top of the headstock?
