What are you's using 'with success' for an automatic air compressor water drain? Basically I see several types. Timed (I'd like to stay away from electrical), self contained (Bendix type), or the kind that uses compressor unloader for signal like the Harbor Freight #46960. Install and forget is the goal!

Thanks
Aaron

These are automatic drain valves that spurt out whatever is there each time the compressor cycles. There are versions with and without integral electric heaters. You can also add the cable operated type shown above by 4sss in post #2 as a manual backup, or just use it manually as a stand alone. These are rugged and reliable drain valves, used and proven by hundreds of thousands of trucks over many decades. They work, and they keep on working. Warning, the electrical heaters are 12 or 24V DC. 1/4" NPT threads. You can get these at most any truck parts store, the heated ones for sure in places where it freezes.

Thanks. I ordered one of thoses Bendix DV-2 knock offs that Bob mentioned from EBAY

I was wondering if you could take one of the electrical timer type. The ones that open up for x seconds every y minutes and then hook it up so it only gets power when the compressor is running. If I could find one that has no "memory" and would start it's open/close cycle when powered it would open every time the compressor started to run for a second or two (or whatever I set it for).

I have been using the HF auto drain for many years without any problems.
Mike,

I have had the exact opposite experience. Went through 3 in a year. Eventually bought an electric timer version and have not had to revisit the issue for many years.

Glad to hear someone was able to get one that lasted.

Ours champion came with one that uses the unloader pressure to control the drain.

Likely not a cheap item but worth the investment.

No unloader? Get one.

What part broke on you? Is the valve causing the issue or is It the tubing and connectors?

It has been a long time since I installed mine but I think I tossed the tubing and connectors that came with my unloaded and used my own.

I do remember having to replace the unloaded valve once. That was from dragging my compressor across some 2x4's and having the entire weight of the compressor come down on the valve... That wasn't the valves fault though. The valve did scold me to be more careful in the future!.. Which I remember quite vividly.
